Iceland 2023, Day 1: Sunday, June 25

Iceland has been a destination of interest for us for many years, especially once Icelandair began offering non-stop flights from Raleigh-Durham (RDU) International Airport.

Our Iceland travel plans began in earnest in January when Icelandair offered some great airfare deals to visit the country. We booked our flights then set to making our plans.

Our first day of travel is today, with a late non-stop flight from Raleigh-Durham (RDU) Airport to Keflavík Airport, the gateway to Iceland in general and to Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital, in particular.

The day began with some concern, as I experienced some unexpected vertigo. Each time I stood up, I had trouble maintaining my bearings. We had a ride planned to the airport so I wasn’t concerned about driving. The vertigo wasn’t so bad that I was in immediate danger of falling, but I knew I would need to be a little cautious walking through the airport to the gate. In reality, I was less worried about my current state than I was about the possibility the vertigo would get worse during our trip, especially since we were renting a car to drive the country.

Nevertheless, we successfully boarded our flight where we were treated to some celebratory champagne.

Iceland is known for its waterfalls and Icelandair is likes to celebrate that in its quirky way with unique cocktail napkins.

After dinner, we will do our best to get some sleep so we are ready when we land at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow and get our adventure started!
